Literacy

Untitled design 6

Literacy is one of the most important skills in life, and Indiana has created initiatives to support and celebrate students’ literacy achievements. Each year in the Hoosier State, third grade students participate in the IREAD assessment. Last year there was a 5% increase in reading proficiency in third grade students across the state, the highest since launching the IREAD in 2013.

Last week our third-grade teachers, Mrs. Mahara and Mrs. Witt traveled with Mrs. Culbreth to the State House in Indianapolis to participate in the Indiana Department of Education’s Literacy Achievement Recognition Program. Schools who have a student passing rate of 95% or higher are honored with a certificate and a chance to meet Dr. Jenner, Indiana Secretary of Education. Mrs. Mahara and Mrs. Witt do a wonderful job of educating our students, preparing them well for this assessment, but we know that this success is not theirs alone. Our kindergarten, first, and second grade teachers play a pivotal role in literacy foundation. All these teachers deserve our thanks and recognition for their work with our students every day. We are grateful to have an amazing team of educators who are dedicated to teaching our students every day!
